A candle burning in the evening is a mood we all love. But it has its downsides: you have to watch it, the wax drips, the smoke sometimes blackens the ceiling, and you keep buying new ones. The flame-effect diffuser tries to keep the best of the candle without these drawbacks. Here is how the two compare.
Safety: a clear win for the diffuser
A candle is a real flame. You don't leave it burning when you leave the room, and you're careful with children or a cat around. A flame diffuser has no fire: the flame effect comes from light projected onto a water mist. You can leave it running and go to another room. Many models, including ours, switch off on their own when the tank is empty.
Scent: you choose
With a scented candle, the scent is fixed when you buy it. With a diffuser, you add a few drops of essential oil to the water and change whenever you like: lavender in the evening, citrus during the day, eucalyptus when you have a cold. Just avoid oily perfume oils, which clog the ultrasonic system.
Good to know: a small diffuser scents a bedroom or office well. In a very large living room, the scent carries less far. It isn't a humidifier for the whole room either.
The mood: a diffuser made for the evening
Let's be honest: a flame effect is still an effect. In the evening with the lights off, it's really convincing, especially with the moving mist. During the day, in a bright room, the flame is barely visible: it's made for evenings. The upside is that you can also pick other colours than the flame's orange, fixed or fading.
The cost over time
A good scented candle often costs 20 to 40 francs and lasts a few evenings. You buy a diffuser once, then it only uses tap water, a few drops of oil and a little USB power. If you light a candle several evenings a week, the diffuser quickly becomes cheaper.
